Mr. Hayes grew up in Charlevoix, Michigan. He is a 1986 graduate of Charlevoix High School. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana in 1990. Mr. Hayes graduated with a law degree (Juris Doctor) from Washington & Lee University, in Lexington, Virginia in 1993.
During law school, Mr. Hayes spent one summer as an intern for Justice Patricia Boyle of the Michigan Supreme Court in Detroit, Michigan, where he assisted with legal research and writing. He spent another summer working in the United States Department of Justice Honor’s Program and was assigned to the Organized Crime & Racketeering Section at “Main Justice” in Washington, D.C., where he helped revise the Federal Manual for the Prosecution of Racketeer Influenced Corrupt Organizations (“RICO”). Also during law school Mr. Hayes was chosen by the famous and now deceased W & L Law Professor, Roger Groot, to take part in the Alderson Practicum Program, where Mr. Hayes and other law students provided legal assistance to female inmates at the Alderson Federal Prison, in Alderson, West Virginia.
After graduating from law school at W & L, Mr. Hayes was admitted to the Missouri Bar and spent one year working as a law clerk to Justice William Ray Price of the Missouri Supreme Court. As a law clerk, Mr. Hayes assisted in the research and writing of various published Missouri Supreme Court opinions. Mr. Hayes was admitted to the State Bar of Michigan in 1994. From 1994 through 2000 Mr. Hayes practiced law in Charlevoix, Michigan with his father, Roy C. Hayes, Jr.* Mr. Hayes has continued the Charlevoix law practice since his father’s retirement in 2000.
Mr. Hayes has extensive litigation experience practicing in both the state and federal courts throughout Michigan including both trial and appellate work. He has successfully tried cases, both criminal and civil, in the various state courts throughout Michigan as well as the United States District Court for the Eastern District and Western District of Michigan. Mr. Hayes has successfully taken and defended numerous appeals for clients to the Michigan Court of Appeals.
Mr. Hayes represented the National Board of Medical Examiners in a claim under the Americans with Disabilities Act in federal court in Detroit. After prevailing at trial, Mr. Hayes successfully defended and argued an appeal in the same case before the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
At the present time Mr. Hayes handles civil cases (including family law, personal injury, wrongful death, automobile negligence, business litigation) and criminal defense in both the state and federal courts.
* Roy C. Hayes, Jr., retired, among other distinguishing accomplishments headed the Public Corruption Strike Force for the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office and tried the “10th Precinct Case”, served as Charlevoix County Prosecutor, and was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to serve as the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, where he successfully prosecuted and personally tried the “Chambers Brothers’ Drug Case.”
